  • Take Action This November with Smile Hub for Mouth Cancer Awareness

This November, let your smile do more than express confidence, let it save lives. Mouth Cancer Action Month is an important national campaign dedicated to raising awareness of one of the fastest-growing cancers in the UK.

Led by the Oral Health Foundation, it focuses on promoting early detection, education, and prevention. At Smile Hub, your trusted dental clinic in the City of London, we are proud to support this vital initiative — and we include a comprehensive oral cancer screening at every dental examination. This essential check is quick, painless, and recommended at least once a year to help ensure early detection and peace of mind.

Why Mouth Cancer Awareness Matters

Mouth cancer cases in the UK continue to rise at an alarming rate. In the past year alone, 10,825 new cases were diagnosed, an increase of 38% over the last decade and a staggering 133% compared to 20 years ago. Sadly, 3,637 people lost their lives to the disease. The survival rate after ten years varies between 18% and 57%, depending on how early the cancer is detected and where it appears.

These numbers highlight the urgent need for awareness and regular dental check-ups. More than half of all mouth cancers develop on the tongue or tonsils, which means that your dental team plays a vital role in spotting early signs that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Understanding the Causes of Mouth Cancers

Although experts do not know the exact causes of mouth cancers, up to 90% of cases are linked to lifestyle choices. Smoking and vaping both significantly increase the risk of developing mouth cancer. Smoking increases the risk by up to ten times compared with non-smokers, while vaping — though often marketed as a safer alternative — still exposes the mouth to potentially harmful chemicals that can irritate and damage oral tissues.

Excessive alcohol consumption contributes to around 30% of all cases, and when smoking or vaping are combined with drinking, the risk multiplies dramatically.

The encouraging news is that small lifestyle changes can significantly lower your chances of developing mouth cancer. Quitting smoking or vaping, reducing alcohol intake, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene can all make a huge difference to your long-term health.

The Importance of Preventive Dentistry

At Smile Hub, we believe that prevention is always better than cure. Preventive dentistry is at the heart of what we do, from routine dental check-ups to oral cancer screenings. These visits allow our experienced team to spot potential problems early, giving you the best possible chance of successful treatment.

A simple mouth examination takes just 45 seconds but could be life-saving. During your appointment, we will look for any long-lasting ulcers, white or red patches, or unusual lumps and bumps. If it has been more than 12 months since your last dental visit, now is the perfect time to book your appointment and make your oral health a priority.

How You Can Get Involved This November

Here are some meaningful ways to participate in Mouth Cancer Action Month and make a difference:

  • Book a dental check-up

Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Early detection is key. Schedule your visit with Smile Hub this November to ensure your mouth is healthy and free from any signs of concern.

  • Do a self-check at home

Take 45 seconds each month to inspect your mouth in the mirror. Look for ulcers that do not heal, red or white patches, or unusual lumps. If you spot anything unusual, get checked out by a dental professional straight away.

  • Raise awareness

Use your voice to help others. Share posts about Mouth Cancer Action Month on social media, talk to your friends and family, and encourage them to book their check-ups. Awareness can save lives.

  • Adopt healthy habits

Stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake are two of the most effective ways to lower your risk. These changes not only protect you from mouth cancer but also support your overall oral and general health.

  • Support the cause

You can contribute by donating to or participating in events hosted by the Oral Health Foundation. Every effort helps to fund education, research, and resources to improve awareness and early diagnosis.

Stay Proactive — Protect Your Smile

Public awareness of mouth cancer risk factors remains worryingly low, with only 8% of people able to identify them. By learning about the risks, symptoms, and prevention methods, you can take control of your oral health and help others do the same.

Remember, the earlier mouth cancer is detected, the greater the chance of a full recovery. If you notice anything unusual or if it is time for your routine check-up, contact Smile Hub in the City of London. Our friendly and experienced team is here to provide expert care, support, and reassurance.
