We are all aware of how much sugar we consume and how that can affect our teeth and gums, but do we know what effect that is having on our body? Are your blood glucose levels in the normal range?
Too much sugar in your blood can weaken white blood cells. This is the body's main defence against bacterial infections that can occur in the mouth as well as other parts of your body. High blood sugar levels can also lead to pre-diabetes and diabetes.
The test will measure the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. Your body takes carbohydrates found in foods like grains and fruits and converts them into glucose. Glucose, a sugar, is one of the body's main sources of energy. High blood glucose levels may be a sign of diabetes, a disorder that can cause heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and other complications. Low blood glucose levels can also lead to health problems if not treated.

This is a very accurate test and measures your blood sugar over the past 12 weeks and can help identify pre-diabetes or determine how well a person's diabetes is being controlled following diagnosis.
A high HbA1c result means that you have too much sugar in your blood. HbA1c or glycated haemoglobin is made when glucose (sugar) in your body sticks to your red blood cells. If your body cannot use sugar properly, more of it sticks to your blood cells and builds up in your blood.

When we measure cholesterol and blood fats, we're really talking about three different numbers: HDL, LDL, and triglycerides.
A lipid profile usually gives results for:
LDL (low-density lipoprotein), the "bad cholesterol"
HDL (high-density lipoprotein), the "good cholesterol"
Triglycerides, the most common type of fat in your body.

A lot of people have no idea of what their cholesterol score is and assume that if they are not overweight it will be in the healthy range. It’s important to get this checked and ensure that you are in the healthy range.
